The Story Behind the Lamplighter Podcast
The idea for Lamplighter was born in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.
During the storm’s recovery, Michael was working for the federal government and directly involved in the response efforts across East Tennessee. In the days that followed, he witnessed something transformative: people offering their time, resources, expertise, and compassion to help lift East Tennessee through one of its darkest chapters.
What stood out most was not the scale of the damage, but the depth of human kindness. Strangers arrived with no expectation of recognition, bringing whatever gifts they had to offer—hands to rebuild, hearts to encourage, and hope to restore what had been lost.
That moment sparked a period of discernment for Michael. As he watched others give freely of their gifts, he began asking a deeper question: What gifts am I meant to offer?
Since childhood, film and media had been his great love—a lifelong passion for storytelling, listening, and preserving moments that matter. Following Hurricane Helene, Michael made a defining transition. He stepped away from ten years of federal service to work for a housing nonprofit serving families directly impacted by the storm, while also launching Lamplighter Media Co.
The Lamplighter Podcast is the natural evolution of that calling.
Over the course of a year-long season, the podcast will feature fifty thoughtfully curated conversations—plus an opening and closing reflection episode—for a total of fifty-two episodes. Each guest is someone using their unique gifts to uplift humanity, strengthen community, and bring light to places that need it most.
All episodes are recorded in the Lamplighter Studio, located in the heart of historic downtown Morristown.

Our Reach
The reach of the Lamplighter Podcast isn’t built on algorithms or paid promotion. It’s built on relationships, trust, and deep regional roots.
A Host With a Statewide Network
The host of the Lamplighter Podcast brings more than a microphone — he brings an entire ecosystem of relationships with him. Through ten years of federal service, he has built connections across the entire state of Tennessee, working closely with:
-
Local leaders
-
Community organizations
-
Nonprofits
-
Businesses
-
Faith communities
-
Educational institutions
This network spans counties, regions, and sectors — creating organic reach that extends well beyond a typical podcast audience.
Deep Roots in East Tennessee
Michael is a native of East Tennessee, raised in the region and deeply connected to its people, culture, and stories. That lived connection matters. Listeners aren’t encountering an outsider telling Appalachian stories — they’re hearing from someone who belongs to the place and understands its nuance, resilience, and dignity.
That authenticity resonates, especially in a region where trust is earned over time.
Strong Ties Across Central Appalachia
In addition to his creative work, Michael serves in nonprofit leadership with Appalachia Service Project (ASP) — an organization with more than 50 years of impact across Central Appalachia, including Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia.
Michael's work in housing, disaster recovery, and volunteer engagement connects his advertisers to:
-
Faith-based networks
-
Colleges and universities
-
Corporate partners
-
Donors and foundations
-
Volunteers from across the country
This extends the podcast’s reach beyond Tennessee into a broader Appalachian audience engaged in service and community-building.
Proven Organic Engagement
Lamplighter’s reach is not theoretical — it’s demonstrated.
The Lamplighter Studio launch video received over 12,000 views organically, with no paid advertising. That engagement came entirely from:
-
Community sharing
-
Word of mouth
-
Genuine interest in the brand and its values
This level of natural engagement reflects a brand people want to support — and are proud to share.
An Inclusive, Open Brand
At its core, Lamplighter is inclusive, welcoming, and human-centered.
The podcast and studio are intentionally designed to be:
-
Open to people of all backgrounds
-
Respectful of diverse beliefs and experiences
-
Grounded in dignity, curiosity, and care
-
Focused on what brings people together, not what divides them
This creates a listening environment where a wide range of people feel safe, seen, and engaged — and where advertisers are associated with connection, generosity, and meaning.
